Ultrasound as a non-invasive and painless diagnostic method using ultrasound waves is perfect for the assessment of the thyroid gland. It can be repeated and performed at any age.
During ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland, we evaluate:
- the location and shape of the thyroid gland
- the size of both lobes (in three dimensions) and the thickness of the isthmus of the thyroid gland
- echogenicity of the thyroid parenchyma
- the presence of pathological changes - e.g. cysts, nodules
- the degree of vascularization of the lobes (normal / pathological) and the pattern of vascularization of the focal lesions found
Indications for an ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland
- abnormal hormonal test results: TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone, regulating and controlling the proper functioning of the thyroid gland), T3 - triiodothyronine, T4 - thyroxine (appropriate thyroid hormones that stimulate the development and growth of the body, enhance metabolism and energy processes, are important for the development of the system nervous)
- enlargement of the thyroid gland
- monitoring the treatment of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
- control after performed procedures
